It’s time to run for the memories.

I was four years old and sitting in a warm, loving kitchen in a small house in Neillsville, Wisconsin. My grandmother made me fish sticks and sat at the table talking with me while I ate. It was a perfect moment.
It’s one of my earliest childhood memories…and it’s the only one I have of my grandmother before the Alzheimer’s and dementia put her in a nursing home for more than 10 years. Every other memory of my grandmother is of uncomfortable visits to the nursing home and watching her body and mind deteriorate.

When she was 19, my grandmother worked for the railroad in Wisconsin as a train attendant and was known for singing to passengers as she worked. When we would visit her in the nursing home, even though her mind could no longer form the words and she didn’t know she was doing it, she would unknowingly hum melodies that a small part of her mind could still remember.

Music had power. Music was magic.

Potterhead Running Club is thrilled to announce that our next charity partner is Music & Memory!

Music & Memory is a non-profit organization that brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm through digital music technology, vastly improving quality of life. They train nursing home staff, as well as family caregivers, to create and provide personalized playlists using iPods/MP3 Players to enable those struggling with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories.
